This Old Clubhouse

Our beloved clubhouse, built largely with volunteer labor and getting up there in years, is starting to show its age. As many of you know, our major focus for the past two years has been the installation of a completely new roof and addressing the water damage that resulted from the degradation of the previous roof over time. The roof project was a massive undertaking requiring a considerable sum of money and time (more so due to the numerous leaks that occurred before we had it replaced), and last month we finally had our manufacturer’s inspection, paid our final invoice, and received our warranty certificate for a roof that should last us at least a couple decades but hopefully more.

There are, unfortunately, other parts of our clubhouse that need attention and will only get worse if not addressed. At the top of that long list was, until last week, a large section of East deck "storage shed" exterior paneling that had completely rotted through and had been allowing water ingress resulting in damage to structural elements on both the deck and shed wall. Luckily for BYC, member Scott Barnes stepped up to flex his contractor skills, learned from the family business, despite his career as a firefighter. Fellow retired firefighter, Rear Commodore Roger Mason partnered with Scott to remove the superfluous fencing behind the shed, pull out the rotten wall panel and water-damaged framing, and replace it with new. The paneling has been painted with two coats of primer and is just awaiting a final roll of yellow to match the rest of the clubhouse. Major props to Scott for taking charge of this issue and taking action, from renting the scaffolding to sourcing the lumber and ensuring he had all the tools to complete the job. He even recruited Roger to help with the demo and (re)-construction! Thanks to you both for a job well done!

As often happens during work projects like this, we discovered even more areas that could use some TLC that were previously not on our radar. So, we've scheduled a work day for Sunday, September 15, from 1000-1600. We'll have a range of projects from small cleaning tasks to some light carpentry and maybe even some plumbing. Pizza and refreshments will be provided for all volunteers. No specific experience is necessary, but if you have construction, contracting, or other trade skills, we’d especially love to have your help! RSVP on the website event or email vicecommodore@berkeleyyc.org. Hope to see you there!
