Meet a BYC Member: David Janinis

David Janinis

When I was eight, my grandpa and I rebuilt an El Toro in their garage in Paradise, CA, near Chico, where I grew up. I learned to sail on lakes, but my grandparents had been cruisers, sailing all over the South Pacific before settling down. I wanted to follow in their wake—only on a global scale. I knew I needed to move to the Bay, where the wind was good. After moving here, I had a partner I knew I couldn’t convince to cross oceans, so I thought joining a club might help.

I joined the closest one to Albany—BYC—where she could meet other avid female sailors. I had already raced in a few Friday night races and enjoyed the competition. I’ve been a member since 2014.

Today, I own two Etchells and dream of racing in events around the world. I’ve raced to Hawaii three times, competed in the Caribbean 600, Van Isle 360 around Vancouver Island, California Coastal Cup, Chicago-Mackinac, and raced from Norway to Scotland. Cruising isn’t really on my radar—except maybe the Northwest Passage someday.

I’ve served as fleet captain, done race committee for a year, and served as rear commodore. Now, I race in San Diego against other Etchells every month and practice in the Bay whenever I can. Worlds are in May 2026. Outside of sailing, I love spending time with family, traveling, 49ers playoff wins, chess, and coaching high school soccer and track—now in my 11th year. Beer is great. Coffee is better.
