Commodore's Message, January 2023

Welcome to a New Year at BYC

By Brian Cline, Commodore

As your Commodore of the Berkeley Yacht Club this year, I am thrilled to welcome in a new year and let me tell you, it’s shaping up to be a real soggy barnburner! In all seriousness, I am excited for all the opportunities the new year holds for our members.

First and foremost, I want to express my deep appreciation for the dedication and hard work of our volunteers, staff, and board members. Their commitment to excellence has made the Berkeley Yacht Club the vibrant and successful community it is today. Without them, we’d be a bunch of people on boats with nowhere to go.

As we move into the new year, I would like to encourage all of our members to get more involved in the club. Whether you’re an experienced sailor or a beginner, there’s something for everyone at the Berkeley Yacht Club. We have a variety of programs and events that allow members to learn new skills, make new friends, and have fun on the water. From our abundant races to our social events and cruises, there’s something for everyone.

Volunteering is a great way to get involved and make a difference in the club. We rely on our volunteers to help with everything from organizing events to running races, to maintaining our facilities. By volunteering, you can help shape the future of the Berkeley Yacht Club and make a real impact on the community. Plus, you’ll have something to talk about at your next dinner party, “So, I was organizing a regatta this weekend...”

Speaking of, another exciting development for the new year is the addition of an entirely new race, hosted right here at the Berkeley Yacht Club. Member and this year’s Treasurer, Evan McDonald’s Windward-Leeward race is an excellent example of a member following through on a vision. This all-new course allows our members to compete against sailors from clubs around the Bay, with the BYC representing not only the finish line but also the after-party. We plan to host more cruises and social events, allowing our members to explore new waters and make new friends. And let’s be real, who doesn’t want to be a part of a group of people who can navigate and drink simultaneously?

Additionally, I would like to remind our members that the Berkeley Yacht Club is more than just a sailing club. We are a community of people who share a passion for the water and a commitment to excellence. Whether you’re a sailor, a power boater, or just someone who loves the water, we welcome you to our community.

In conclusion, I am excited for the upcoming year and all the opportunities it holds for our members. I encourage everyone to get involved in the club and take advantage of all the programs and events we have to offer. And most importantly, I encourage everyone to volunteer, as it is essential to keep the club running smoothly. Together, we will continue to make the Berkeley Yacht Club the best it can be. Let’s have a great sailing season!
