Commodore's Message, April 2023

Dear Berkeley Yacht Club Members,

I am pleased to share some uplifting updates on the recent happenings at our beloved club, highlighting the enthusiasm and growth within our community.

We are excited to report an increase in membership, with 6 new members joining our ranks, bringing our current membership to 311. We are particularly thrilled to see a rise in junior members, as they bring fresh energy and passion to our club.

Among our new members are Beth Ann and Venice Hockey, who recently acquired a 54-foot power yacht and will live aboard at the Berkeley Marina. Venice will attend Berkeley High in the Fall, and after some electrical work and captain training, they will be ready deploy their fine vessel as committee boat!

Another new member is Paulo Juvara, an experienced sailor who has been racing on J/105s and recently purchased one. He has been a frequent visitor to BYC after races, and we are excited to welcome him to our community. We also welcome Steve and Elizabeth Hart, Alex Aguilar, and Susan Steward, each bringing their unique experiences and interests to our club.

Our Friday Night Racing has been charging ahead with great attendance, and preparations for the Lipton Cup are underway. Many thanks to the Race and Beer Can Committees. In addition, the club recently hosted a modestly successful swap meet, with special thanks to our Port Captain Ibrahim Sargin and his ranks of mighty volunteers for their hard work and dedication.

We have been improving our facilities, including working on the guest dock and receiving a new emergency swim ladder. We recently hosted Island Yacht Club for a weekend event and a presentation on women's sailing.

Our recent Easter Egg hunt was a success, and we are currently planning a kids camp, a July 4th BBQ, and other exciting events for our members. The club is also undergoing roof construction, which will temporarily affect access to the building but should be completed within two weeks of starting.

Lastly, our membership application process is being reviewed to ensure new members feel welcomed and engaged. We are committed to fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among all our members. Thank you for your continued support and involvement in the Berkeley Yacht Club. Let's keep our sails full and by and our spirits high as we enjoy the many activities and events we have planned in the coming months.

Fair winds and following seas,

Brian Cline Commodore
