BYC Fourth Friday Movie Night, Friday February 28:
First Feature:
Moby Dick
Second Feature:
Captains Courageous
A note from your host, Paul Kamen:
If you thought Gregory Peck was good as Horatio Hornblower, wait ‘till you see him as Captain Ahab.
The 6 PM showing will be the 1956 production of Moby Dick, starring Peck (with an appearance by Orson Welles).
Welles is preaching in the New Bedford church, from a “pulpit” constructed from a replica of a ship’s bow. Ever since the film was released, tourists to New Bedford ask to see the famous church with the ship’s pulpit. But it’s fictional. New Bedford had to build it to match the film, to keep the tourists happy. (Same deal as the dyke in Holland where the boy put his finger in the leak to save the town.) The shipboard scenes are surprisingly authentic-looking. And frankly, I like the movie a lot better than the book. No spoilers, I won’t tell how it ends.
Then at 8:30, it’s Spencer Tracy as a young Portuguese fisherman in the 1937 Captains Courageous. This is one of my favorite sailing movies of all time, with some very good schooner race action. They don’t make movies like that anymore – probably way too dangerous to play with old wooden schooners in that much wind...Tracy will show up again as the old Cuban fisherman in The Old Man and the Sea. Hemingway himself participated in this 1958 production, so it’svery true to the book. Great photography too. Maybe next month…
